Why the Varsity Jacket Refuses to Die
It was designed in 1865 at Harvard as a baseball letter sweater, became the leather-sleeved letterman by the 1930s, and has been continuously in style since. The reason is structural: wool body for warmth, leather sleeves for wear resistance, ribbed collar and cuffs to seal heat. Every design choice solves a problem, which is why it never dates.
What Separates a Good One From a Costume
- Real leather sleeves. This is the whole point. Synthetic sleeves crack at the elbow within a season - the exact spot a student leans on a desk.
- Wool or wool-blend body, not thin polyester fleece.
- Ribbing that snaps back. Stretched-out cuffs are what make a varsity look secondhand.
- Snap front, not zip - the traditional closure, and it sits flatter.
Color: Pick Two, Not Five
