There are roughly two months a year - one in spring, one in fall - when a winter jacket is too much and a shirt is not enough. That gap is exactly what the leather overshirt was made for, and it is the most underused piece in most wardrobes.
What Is a Leather Overshirt?
An overshirt (or 'shacket') is cut like a shirt - straight hem, shirt collar, button or snap front, chest pockets - but made in jacket materials and sized to layer over a tee or knit. In leather, it becomes something better than either: shirt shape, jacket weather resistance.
Overshirt vs Trucker vs Harrington
These overlap, and the names get used loosely:
- Overshirt - shirt collar, straight hem, softest and least structured.
- Trucker - the denim-jacket silhouette in leather: chest pockets, button front, cropped at the waist with an adjustable tab.
- Harrington - short, zip or button front, ribbed or banded hem, often with a stand collar.

Color: This Is Where Overshirts Get Interesting
Because the piece is light and shirt-shaped, it carries color far better than a heavy jacket does:
- Black - the one that disappears into any outfit.
- Nevada Brown - the warm, western-leaning classic.
- Denim Blue - leather that reads like denim from a distance, then does not.
- Two-tones - black/white, black/red and black/yellow for the racing-panel look.
How to Wear It
- Open over a tee. The default. Sleeves pushed once, hem left loose.
- Buttoned as the top layer. With dark jeans and boots it reads sharper than a shirt and softer than a jacket.
- Under a coat in winter. This is the move most people miss - a leather overshirt is a mid-layer that adds real warmth without bulk.
Fit Notes
