September Layering: When to Switch to Leather

September is the month leather comes back out, and there is a fairly specific temperature where it starts making sense. Here is the layering map for the next eight weeks.

The Temperature Guide

  • Above 20°C - too warm for leather. An overshirt carried, not worn.
  • 15-20°C - a leather overshirt or unlined jacket over a tee. This is the sweet spot for the Trucker Harrington range.
  • 10-15°C - a standard lined biker or trucker over a tee or thin knit. Peak leather-jacket weather.
  • 5-10°C - jacket plus a proper knit, or a leather vest as a mid-layer.
  • Below 5°C - time for shearling or an aviator (Shearling & Fur).

The Layering Order That Works

  1. Base: cotton tee or merino long-sleeve. Thin.
  2. Mid: a fine-gauge knit, overshirt, or leather vest. This is the layer you add and remove as the day changes.
  3. Outer: the leather jacket - windproof by nature, which is what makes the whole system work.

The principle: leather is an excellent wind barrier and a mediocre insulator. Let it block the wind and let the mid-layer do the warming. Get that backwards - heavy hoodie under a thin jacket - and you get bulk without warmth.

The September Problem: 12°C Mornings, 22°C Afternoons

This is what makes autumn dressing hard. Two solutions that actually work:

  • The vest system. A leather vest over a long-sleeve tee handles the morning; the vest comes off at lunch and takes no space in a bag.
  • The overshirt system. A leather overshirt worn open in the afternoon, buttoned in the evening - one piece, two temperatures.

What to Wear Underneath

Merino and fine cotton beat cotton hoodies under leather - they compress, so the jacket still fits, and they handle the temperature swings better. Save the hoodie for over-the-jacket streetwear looks, or for when the jacket was sized with room for it (fit rules).

Get the Jacket Ready

Buying Now vs Waiting

September is when the good sizes are still in stock. By late October, popular sizes in winter styles start disappearing - especially shearling. If you know you need a warm jacket this year, buying it in the shoulder season is simply easier.
