Buying a leather jacket online as a woman comes with one consistent challenge: most sizing guides are written for men's straight-cut fits, and women's leather jacket sizing varies more significantly between styles — and between brands — than almost any other garment. Here's a complete guide to measuring yourself correctly and picking the right size for the specific style you're buying.
Why Women's Leather Jacket Sizing Is Different
Women's leather jackets are cut to follow the natural curve of the body — narrower at the waist, wider at the hip — rather than the straight-drop cut used in men's styles. This means two measurements matter more for women than they typically do for men: the bust and the hip. A jacket that fits through the shoulders and bust can still feel tight through the hip in a fitted style, or boxy through the waist in a straighter cut. Knowing your measurements before ordering is the single most reliable way to get the fit right the first time.
The Three Measurements You Need
Bust: Wrap a tape measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping it level around your back. Don't pull it tight — keep it snug but not compressed. This is the most important measurement for jacket sizing.
Waist: Measure around your natural waist — the narrowest point of your torso, usually an inch or two above your navel. This matters most for fitted biker and moto styles that taper at the waist.
Hip: Measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat. For longer bomber and aviator styles that sit below the hip, this measurement determines whether the jacket will sit cleanly or pull when you move.
Every product page in our women's leather jacket collection includes a size chart specific to that style — always check the measurements on the individual product rather than using a generic size chart, since cuts vary between styles.
Fit Guide by Style
Biker jackets: Our women's biker jackets are cut close to the body by design — slim through the bust and waist. Size based on your bust measurement. If your bust and waist are more than 10 inches apart, size to your bust and the waist will have comfortable give due to the natural stretch of the leather.
Bomber jackets: Bombers are cut looser through the body and designed to layer. True to size for most builds. If you plan to wear a thick sweater underneath, check the bust measurement in the size chart with that layer in mind.
Aviator jackets: Because of the shearling collar and insulated lining, aviator jackets carry more visual bulk in the upper body. Size to your bust measurement — the lining already accounts for layering room, so don't add extra size for warmth.
Sizing for Layering vs Wearing Over a Base Layer Only
The most common sizing mistake in women's leather jackets is buying a size up "for layering" and ending up with a jacket that looks too large for the silhouette. Leather doesn't drape the way a loose sweater does — extra fabric through the body shows as excess material bunching at the sides. Buy to fit your measurements, and if you regularly wear thick layers underneath, check the bust measurement with that layer accounted for rather than going up a full size by default.
Sleeve Length
Sleeve length is less variable in leather jackets than in knitwear, but worth checking if you're between sizes. Measure from your shoulder bone to your wrist with your arm slightly bent. The sleeve should end at or just below your wrist bone, covering the wrist fully but not extending over the hand.
If You're Between Sizes
For fitted biker jackets, go up — biker cuts are intentionally slim and the leather will mold to your body over the first few wears. For looser bomber and aviator styles, go down — these cuts have more room built in and sizing down keeps the silhouette clean.
